AC Milan has won the Italian league title a total of 17 times since the club was founded in 1899. After their 2:1 triumph against Liverpool in May 2007, their tally of European titles rose to seven in the Champions League and the European Champions Clubs' Cup, as the competition was known until 1992. The Coppa Italia, the national Italian Cup, has been awarded to the Rossoneri five times.
The end of 2007 saw another great triumph for the then defending Champions League winners when they took their fourth FIFA Club World Cup title in Yokohama.
Legendary coaches and players have shaped the various eras of the club: in the 60s, it was Nereo Rocco and Nils Liedholm, and in the 80s and 90s, Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello. Under the direction of the latter, Milan dominated world soccer, led by the great Dutch triumvirate Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten. Coach Ancelotti and players such as Paolo Maldini, Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka, were the protagonists of the recent past.
