German Handball League

Since October 2006, bwin has been the official betting partner of the TOYOTA Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) as well as official sponsor of their Final Four, All-Star Game and Super Cup.

Handball is the most popular team sport in Germany after football, and the German league, which was founded in 1966, is considered to be one of the best in the world and regularly produces European Championship winners.

The most successful clubs in the league are, without a doubt, VfL Gummersbach (the only remaining founding member and 12-time champions), and record-breaking THW Kiel (13-time champions). They are closely followed by SC Magdeburg (the best of the former GDR teams and 6-time European Cup winners) and Frisch Auf Göppingen, who were 11-time champions with legend Bernhard Kem.

The HBL gained even more popularity following the German national team’s win at the 2007 Handball World Championships. The result was amazing: over the course of the season, a total of 1,500,000 fans had watched games live at the venues with many more watching the live broadcasts on German sports channel DSF.
